About Specific Gravity (SG) and Degrees Plato (°P)
This is a calculator to convert between Specific Gravity (SG) and Degrees Plato (°P). Specific Gravity is commonly used to describe the wort or beer density in brewing in the US and the UK and is directly measured with a hydrometer.
Continental Europe (and sometimes the US) as well as many professional brewers worldwide will use Degrees Plato (°P). This measurement is based on the weight percentage of sugar in the wort and is indirectly measured with a hydrometer or a refractometer.
Approximation of Degree Plato
A loose approximation of Degrees Plato would be to take the number of Specific Gravity points and divided by four. For example, if a wort has a SG of 1.044, then the Degrees Plato would be approximately 11°P.
